Devlog #003: Powering the Wasteland
dev 01 Oct 2025

We’re excited to dive into one of Yugopunk’s most unique base-building features: electricity. In a world where society has collapsed, power isn’t just a convenience—it transforms your outpost. Lights keep the night safe, automated defenses protect your home, and electricity can even connect to other systems, like sprinklers for farming or cooking. Produced energy can be stored in portable batteries or can fill up different kinds of Accessory items, such as a lamp.

Generating Power

Every watt starts with fuel. Our first working prototype is the Wood Gas Generator—a rugged, cobbled-together device you can build in your base. Feed it wood and it will crank out the precious current needed to run your base.

It’s noisy. It’s smoky. And it feels right at home in the industrial wasteland. You’ll need to manage your fuel carefully: cutting logs, scavenging scrap, and deciding when it’s worth burning through resources to keep the lights on.

Storing Energy

All that generated power needs somewhere to live when the generator’s off. Enter the Battery System. Players can craft and install makeshift batteries to store excess power, keeping lights on and devices running even after the generators are shut down.

Batteries give you flexibility. You can power your base overnight, stockpile energy for emergencies, or run short bursts of heavy machinery without keeping the generator running 24/7.

Electricity can be stored in many items, such as a portable lamp that can be equipped as a gear.

Wiring the Grid

Electricity isn’t just about production; it’s about distribution. With cables and switches, you can create your own mini-grid. Connect multiple rooms, run lines through walls or ceilings, and use switches to control which sections get juice. Want to cut power to your workshop but keep the kitchen running? Flip a switch, and you’re good to go.

Lighting the Night

Darkness hides danger. We’ve added wall and ceiling lights that can be placed almost anywhere in your base. Lights deter enemies, helps your team navigate, and makes those long, tense nights a little less grim.

What We’re Working On

Here’s where our focus is right now:

  • Expanded Generator Options – Additional generator devices beyond the basic wood gas generator, giving players different ways to create electricity. Solar energy is tempting!
  • New Electric Devices – Machines and gadgets that draw from your grid, adding more strategy to how you distribute and conserve energy. Ideas vary from Cooking Stove, simple defensive Turrets, Logic Gates, etc.
  • Grid Management Tools – Improvements to wiring, switching, and monitoring so large bases can manage complex power demands more effectively

What’s Next

These systems are still in development. We’ll be adding more devices that require electricity, along with different kinds of generators to give players new ways to produce and manage power.
